1. Raise it up: In certain cases, most commonly beaches and lakes, when your building your home you can put them on stilts to keep rising water levels out. Even an inch of water can do damage to your home, so elevating the flood level like this will protect your home. The best time to do this is before you build your home.
2. Sump Pumps: If your home is flooding regularly, it may be time to install a sump pump. This allows for the water to escape by releasing it outside your home, away from flood plains. The cost for this can range from hundreds to a couple thousand dollars depending on the pump and potential installation costs.
3. Dry Flood-Proofing: This is when you apply sealants onto your walls/windows so that water cannot enter your home through cracks in the walls, or cracks in between the wall and the window. These items will set you back a couple hundred dollars, but could save you thousands in the long run.
4. Raise outlets: All outlets should be about a foot above flood level. Doing this will prevent electrical damage in the event of a flood.
5. Check Valves: By using Check valves, you can seal off your home from the flood pressure caused by rising waters. These are inexpensive and will ensure that you can stop incoming water.
6. Regrading your lawn: If your property sits where the lawn is tilting toward the house, you are in danger of flood water rising around you home. To prevent this, you need to regrade the surface so that you’re leveling out the incline of your yard and the water is going to an appropriate place. To do this you just need heavy soil with a clay content and sand.
7. Protect your siding: Mulch can make the siding on your home rot. If you’ll keep a space between the siding and the mulch, you will allow the home to completely dry after a storm, and won’t cause the structure to rot.
8. Gutter Run-off: Water will pool up at the corners of your property if you don’t let the water be drained elsewhere. By directing this water into a gutter, you won’t see it again and it’ll stay away from your home.
9. Raise appliances- Appliances like water heaters, generators, washing and drying machines and air conditioning units should always be up off of the floor so that if water were to come in, they will be unharmed.
